Stutt's Pharmacy
Stutt's
Pharmacy is situated at 5344 Main Street in Orono. This location has been
used as a pharmacy since 1868 when Orono's first pharmacist, Lorenzo A.
Gamsby, purchased the property and converted the ground floor into a drug
store and the second storey into a photo studio.
The present business is operated and owned by Tino Montopoli B.Sc.Phm, CDE and wife Christine Maloley B.Sc.Phm. Upon acquiring the business in 1997, Tino & Chris made it a priority to bring back the atmosphere and look of the old-fashioned drug store. Renovations included a new store front with period wood moldings painted in heritage colours. Inside, new carpeting with large floral print was laid. The old cast iron grills were retained and brass accent lamps were hung in the dispensary with shelving outfitted in dark mahogany wood thus recapturing the ambience of days gone by. While Stutt's Pharmacy may have the look and feel of an old-fashioned drug store, it is far from it when it comes to innovation. Tino and the pharmacy have received national recognition by the pharmaceutical industry for work in diabetes education. In November 1997, Tino was given the Commitment to Care Honourable Mention Award by the Pharmacy Practice Journal. In 1998 , Tino was awarded the 'Pharmacist Diabetes Educator of the Year Award' by the Canadian Pharmacists Association. In June 1998, Tino published an article in Pharmacy Practice Journal and lectures frequently to both lay and professional groups across the province about diabetes education. Tino is the only pharmacist who is also a Certified Diabetes Educator in the Durham Region. Message
